He was born in Terre Haute Jan. 1, 1945, to Ezra Edward Nichols and Evelyn A. Inman Nichols.
He is survived by his wife Mary Nichols, whom he married Dec. 23, 1966.
Also surviving are his mother Evelyn A. Krockenberger and his daughters Leah Campbell and husband Les, and Sara Bateman and husband Mark.
In addition, surviving are grandchildren Cade Campbell, Selah Campbell, Hannah Bateman and Brad Bateman.
Other survivors include brother Wayne E. Nichols and wife Cindy, nephew Bob Nichols, nieces Tara Workman, Deanna Young and Lynn Patterson, who generously donated a kidney to him four years ago.
He was a retired school teacher, having taught at Van Buren Elementary for 35 years and during that time, enjoyed coaching various sports.
He was a member of Hulman Street Wesleyan Chapel.
Funeral services will take place at DeBaun Springhill Chapel Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Harvey Weaver officiating.
Burial will follow in Highland Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, from 4-8 p.m., in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the American Cancer Society or the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization in his memory.
