According to information provided by the Clay County Sheriff's Department (CCSD), Tommy K. Edmonson, 64, Turner, and Jared Cooksey, 19, also of Turner, were both arrested on charges related to a child molestation investigation conducted by the department.
The investigation began Nov. 21, when officials were contacted by Child Protective Services in regard to the possible molestation of a Clay County youth.
Due to the age of the victim and the time frame involved, a forensic interview was scheduled and carried out.
During the investigation, the young victim told interviewers that Cooksey's alleged molestation of them began about five years ago while Edmonson's allegedly began approximately one year ago.
As the investigation was coming to a conclusion Nov. 30, CCSD officials received a report from a member of the alleged victim's family that Cooksey and a juvenile male had just driven in the area of the victim's home and fired a handgun into the air.
CCSD Det. Jerry Siddons, the lead investigator in the case, spotted Cooksey riding a motorcycle into the Turner area a few minutes after the report of fired shots.
According to reports, Siddons attempted to intercept the motorcycle before a chase ensued.
Cooksey and his passenger allegedly stopped in the driveway of a relative's home in Turner and then ran behind the home into a fenced-in area.
When support arrived, Cooksey and the juvenile were taken into custody.
A handgun was found hidden near a woodpile in the area which Siddons had spotted Cooksey and the juvenile running to.
Cooksey and the juvenile, a 17-year-old male, were transported to the Clay County Justice Center for questioning.
The Clay County Juvenile Court authorities opted to not detain the juvenile. However, Cooksey was incarcerated.
Charging information against Edmonson and Cooksey was presented to Vigo County Superior Court Judge Michael Rader, who ordered the pair to be held on $50,000 bond, with no 10 percent allowed.
Edmonson was preliminarily charged with Child Molestation (a class B felony) and Sexual Misconduct with a Minor (a class C felony).
Cooksey was charged with Child Molestation, Sexual Misconduct with a Minor, Criminal Recklessness (a class C felony) and Possession of a Handgun Without a License (a class A misdemeanor).
