Northview boys earn first win, girls fall to Eagles

Sunday, December 2, 2012

Times Staff Report

NASHVILLE -- The Northview boy's basketball team picked up its first win under new head coach Clint Weddle, holding off a Brown County rally for a 46-44 victory on Saturday night. Their female counterparts didn't have quite as much success in dropping a 51-31 WIC decision.

The Knights used their size to their benefit in the boy's game while building a 32-19 lead through three quarters. However, Brown County used a press defense in the fourth quarter to speed up the Knights and cause turnovers. The result was an Eagles' rally that got them within 38-37 in the final period. The Knights' poor free throw shooting didn't help as Northview made just 15-of-30 in the contest. The Eagles were able to tie the game on a pair of free throws by Collin Hoskins with just 20 seconds remaining. Northview re-took that lead and Brown County missed a potential tying shot at the buzzer.

Jim Mace led Northview with 14 points with Travis Hakman and Daniel Kimball each adding eight and Joe Ball producing seven points in the win.

In the girl's game, the Knights also had their share of free throw shooting issues, making just 9-of-17 in the game.

Brown County's Sasha Robinson proved to be an even bigger issue as the Eagle senior produced 17 points and snagged 12 boards to help her team halt a three-game losing skid. Teammate Whitney Williamson added 17 in the victory for Brown County.

The Northview girls got eight points from Mikayla Rowan and six apiece from Mallory Smith and Ashley Hughes.

The Northview boys improved to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the WIC and the girls fall to 3-5 overall, 0-1 in the WIC with a home game against West Vigo on Friday with a 6 p.m. girl's game to be followed by the boys.
