Board of Works approves fire protection contract

Thursday, December 27, 2012

Jake Bennett
On Thursday, the Brazil Board of Public Work and Safety approved a contract between the Brazil Fire Department and Brazil Township for fire protection.

According to Brazil Fire Chief Jake Bennett, the contract specifies fire protection for the unincorporated areas of the township.

"(Mayor Brian Wyndham) and I spoke with (Brazil Township Trustee T.J. Sneddon) and discussed some things about the contract," Bennett said. "Everything is OK with this."

During Thursday's meeting, Sneddon said the contract includes $12,000 for fire protection and $8,000 for an equipment fund.

Taxpayer money is earmarked annually for the contract.

"The township trustee has an obligation to provide fire protection," Bennett said.

The contract allows for fire protection as far north as County Road 1150 North of the city limits, in addition to as far south as the White Rock Road area. In addition, it allows for fire protection as far east as Bell Street (Tower Road) and as far west as Craig Park.

Sneddon added half of the money for the contract is to be paid by June 30, 2013, with the remaining half to be paid by Dec. 31, 2013.

In other business, the board:

* Learned an unsafe building order for 642 W. Jackson St., Brazil, had been removed and no further action would take place.

The Board of Public Work and Safety meets regularly on the second and final Wednesday of each month at Brazil City Hall.

Its next meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013.
