A night after Terre Haute South's Jeffrey Turner went off for a 37-point effort against them, the Northview Knights were tasked with slowing down Mooresville's high-scoring Jacob Johnson.

The Knights were able to do just that in the second half, but it was the junior's 21 points before halftime that spurred Mooresville to a decisive 63-43 victory on Saturday evening.

"He played extremely well. I was very impressed with him all over the floor tonight," Northview coach Clint Weddle said of the Mooresville junior. "Offensively, defensively and he had a tremendous feel for how to get open and when to move to the ball. He gives his teammates a lot of opportunities."

The 6'6 forward gave the Knights fits on both ends of the court, but it was his 5'8 teammate J.T. Hurt, who unloaded three 3-pointers in the opening period. The opening salvo was part of a nine 3-pointer outburst for the Pioneers in the game. Mooresville opened up a 20-8 lead after one period, hitting 8-of-14 shots from the field. In the second period, Mooresville's pressure defense caused havoc for the Knights, who turned the ball over nine times. Two of them lead to dunks by Johnson as the Pioneers cruised to a 38-14 lead at the break.

"We were a little lethargic to start to say the least on both sides of the ball," Weddle said. "I thought we ended well with Ethan (Whitson) demanding the ball especially coming off the night he had (Friday) night. So that's what we'll continue to try and focus on.

"I need to do a better job of putting us in some type of scenario where we're not turning that thing over at half court," Weddle continued. "We tried a couple of different things and we'll continue to do that. We just need to focus on some fundamentals and that's all you can do. You have to stay steadfast and we will."

Mooresville's lead grew to as much as 33 after a 3-pointer by Lane Weaver and a score in the lane from the sophomore.

However, the Knights continued to battle to the final buzzer.

Ethan Whitson scored nine of his 12 points in the final quarter and he started a 15-4 closing run by the Knights. Jim Mace scored a bucket before Whitson hit two free throws and added a traditional three-point play. Travis Hakman added three free throws as part of his 10-point game before the Pioneers' Jonathan Gluntz broke a 12-0 Knights' run with a free throw. Peter Tanoos followed with a bucket, Whitson added a free throw and Hakman capped the scoring.

Despite the disappointing start to the game, Weddle noted that his team will learn from the weekend and get ready for a quick turnaround before facing Bloomington North tomorrow night.

"We get to play a very good opponent on Tuesday (Bloomington North). It's nice to see two sectional opponents and see that we are capable and see what they consist of tonight," Weddle said. "Our approach will be very steadfast in what we are doing and we'll continue to expect good things."

Junior varsity/freshman games

The varsity Knights weren't alone in their struggles against the Pioneers as the freshman contest went to Mooresville, 36-28 and the junior varsity slumped in the second half of a 46-29 loss.

The Northview freshman jumped out quickly to start the evening as Quinn Hayes used his quickness to get to the rim for a pair of early scores and Nathan Thomas added five points in the opening period. The result was a 9-3 lead at the first stop by the Knights.

The second quarter was nearly the opposite as 6'3 Mooresville freshman Clint Moore scored four of his 12 points and Cameron Harris got to the hoop for a pair of fieldgoals.

Mooresville lead 14-13 at halftime and the teams traded blows in the third period as Hayes dropped in five of his 14 points, Sam Grimes added a bucket and Thomas posted two of his seven points.

Northview went into the final period trailing 24-23, but Mooresville controlled the final six minutes as Austin Long scored off a drive and Ben Sharp added a bucket for a 28-23 advantage. The Knights got within 28-25 on a put back by Grimes, but the Pioneers finished the game off despite a late 3-pointer from Hayes.

In the JV contest, Northview was within 21-16 to start the second half after a 3-pointer from Keegan Roembke, but the Pioneers' Keiffer Suddeth answered with a long-range shot and would add a second late in the quarter.

Jacob Harden hit two free throws and Nate Newton scored a bucket, but the Pioneers ended the quarter on a 10-0 run to extend the lead to 36-22.

Newton had eight points for Northview, Mark Underwood had six and both Harden and Gaddis Baysinger added four.

The Knights (5-7 overall) host Bloomington North Tuesday in a freshman, junior varsity, varsity triple header beginning at 5 p.m.
