Stanley was born Aug. 28, 1922, the son of Ira Truman and Ora (Tresner) Smith.
Stanley graduated from Brazil High School.
Following high school, he enlisted into the United States Army, where he served as a paratrooper.
He retired from General Motors where he tested diesel engines in the Electro-motive division.
He married Roberta June Martin in 1986.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Brazil.
In his spare time, he took great interest in reading western books and listening to older country music.
Stanley really enjoyed watching baseball games and playing golf.
Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and three brothers.
He is survived by his wife Roberta June (Martin) Smith, Terre Haute, son Daniel Smith (Melody), Colorado, grandchildren Leah Gilliland and Amber Brown (Tony), great-grandchildren Madison Gilliland, Mallory Gilliland, Trevor Brown and Taylor Brown, sisters Genevieve Blair and Berniece Lincoln, as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Services will be Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at 1 p.m., at French Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at Rockville Memory Gardens, where the United States Army will have military honors.
Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, from 11 a.m., until time of service at the funeral home.
