BLOOMFIELD -- The Northview Knights ended the regular season in style Thursday night getting a 10-foot jumper from sophomore McKenzi Kumpf with seconds left to win a 40-39 decision on the road at Bloomfield.
The Knights fell behind early to the Cardinals, who jumped out to an 11-2 advantage early on before Northview began to chip away at the lead. Northview cut the lead to 15-10 at the end of the first quarter before another Bloomfield surge pushed the gap back to 10 points.
Northview bounced back to get within 24-22 at the break as Sierra Girton drilled a big 3-pointer before the end of the period.
In a see-saw second half, the Knights were able to get a four-point lead late in the contest before a 5-0 run by Bloomfield nearly sunk Northview's chances. However, trailing by a point, the Knights ran a play with several seconds remaining, missed the shot, but it was tipped out to Kumpf, who drilled the game-winner. Bloomfield called a timeout with one second remaining, but missed the shot at the horn.
"We played hard all night. It was a tough environment to play in, their crowd was loud and rowdy," Northview coach Scott Buell said. "Girton hit a big 3 at the end of the half from about 25-feet and then Kumpf hit a big shot to give us the lead at the end. It was a nice win for us to keep some momentum going into the sectionals."
The Knights, who were without senior Cassie Weddle due to illness, got 10 points from Abbey Timberman and eight from Kumpf to go with 14 from Mikayla Rowan. Girton added six points and Whitney Halfhill posted two.
The Knights improved to 8-13 overall heading into sectional play at Terre Haute South against the Braves on Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m.
