TERRE HAUTE -- Facing a tough and talented Terre Haute South squad on its home court to open postseason play, the margin of error was slim for Northview on Tuesday evening. The Braves quickly erased that margin with a Tasia Brewer offensive assault to open the game as Terre Haute South pulled away for a 65-32 victory.

Brewer hit five straight shots in the opening period on the way to a 21-point effort and South knocked home nine 3-pointers in the game to put Northview away.

"Obviously, coming into the game we were keying on (Brewer), she's averaging 18 or 19 points a game and she goes on a 7-0 run to start the game," Northview coach Scott Buell said of the Braves' senior. "That just got them off to the start that they needed and we were just playing from behind the entire game.

"They shot the ball tremendously. If they shoot the ball like that, they will be very tough to beat in this sectional," Buell added.

What added to the Knights' problems was the Braves' bench depth.

Northview got 5'11 senior Emily Bell in foul trouble early, but South countered with 6'4 sophomore Lindley Higham, who made things difficult in the post.

Sophomore Mikayla Rowan scored all seven of the Knights' points in the opening period before Higham entered the game and added six points of her own in the first half. She also added a pair of blocks and generally disrupted Northview's post threats according to Buell.

"She's so long that she affects a lot of shots on the inside. Obviously she can rebound with that kind of length and poses a lot of problems," Buell said. "I thought we could have attacked the basket a little more at times, but when you've got 6'4 in there it's tough to go in there and battle with them."

Leading 19-7 after the opening quarter, South extended that margin to 33-18 at halftime though the Knights mostly held their own in the second period. Mallory Smith scored four points and the Northview front court provided six points and four rebounds in the second quarter.

Northview clawed within 33-20 to open the second half after Smith got an offensive rebound and scored, but the Braves began to exert some muscle on the offensive glass themselves.

Kylie Fendrick scored off a steal for South and Rowan countered with a drive and a free throw as Northview trailed 38-23. However, Fendrick drilled a 3-pointer and Bell followed with another after South picked up a loose ball offensive board. Following a free throw by Northviwew senior Ashley Hughes, Abby Shanks came off the bench to nail another 3 for the Braves. A bucket by Labrea Joyner capped an 11-1 run to finish the third period for South.

The Braves continued to extend that run in the fourth quarter as Bell scored twice and Brewer completed a three-point play to put South up 56-24. The home standing Braves would add three more from beyond the arc, late in the game to finish off the victory.

The Knights got 16 points and 15 rebounds from Rowan and eight points to go with eight boards from Smith. Hughes posted six in her final game as she joined classmates Cassie Weddle and Sierra Girton in their last game on the high school court.

"I want to thank our three seniors for sticking it out. They've been through a lot in their four years," Buell said. "I'm really proud of their effort and the leadership that they gave. We're going to miss all three of them next year."

For the Knights, the season concludes following a seven-game improvement from last year. Northview wraps up an 8-13 year.

"We're definitely disappointed tonight. We thought we could come over here and compete and really work at it and have a chance to win the basketball game," Buell said. "When you look at the overall season, we're seven better than we were last year. So we are very happy with that. We have a lot of work to do this spring and summer to get better, get in the weight room and get stronger."
