To the Editor:

I've lived in Clay County all of my life and I'm really disappointed in the cancellation of the Popcorn Festival.

The committee for this festival worked so hard to make it the great event that it was.

It was held at a beautiful time of the year and people really enjoyed getting out.

Any volunteer job is a thankless one. Believe me, I know because over the years, I have volunteered for several organizations.

I have not helped with the Popcorn Festival, but I can only imagine the many hours and work that went into it.

I for one, appreciated everything the committee did.

I'm beginning to wonder about the park board, though, as it seems that by charging the festival committee rent, they should be overjoyed that they were providing free entertainment for the people in the county.

While I'm picking at the park board, there is another thing that has really concerned me. I think that the new walking trail at Craig Park is really nice and I know that a grant paid for most or all of that, but it used to be a great place to take your (children) and (grandchildren) to fish.

It seems they did not give those people much consideration when planning the trail.

They cut out most of the parking spaces alone the east side of the lake and took away all access to the fishing spots on the north side of the lake.

I have taken my grandson there fishing for several years and people used to be lined up all along the north bank all the way to the dam. But no more -- had to block it all off with the walking trail. Did it ever occur to you that some people, including handicapped people in wheelchairs, have no way to get along the lake?

As far as people drinking at the festival, are you so na*ve to think that there aren't some people who have already had a few when they go over for the entertainment. They bring their drinks disguised in big cups or go to their cars and get more.

You can't control everything.

Personally, I think the right thing might have been to allow it this year and see how that played out.

If there were a lot of problems, then deny it next time around.

Let the committee make a few bucks to help out their cause.

There seem to be a lot of do-gooders on the surface who are very close-minded.

In closing, from what I understand, the committee was almost crucified from even putting in a request to get a license.

If you're really a Christian, and this is against your conviction, fine. But do not criticize these hard working people who have given so much of themselves and their time for the good of the community.

Thank you Popcorn Festival for the 10 years of enjoyment.

Sincerely,

Donna Mullinix,

Harmony
