A not very neighborly situation

Sunday, October 6, 2013

To the Editor:

On Friday evening, around 8:30 p.m., someone knocked on my front door.

Upon answering it, I discovered a lady police officer with another officer standing out by the road.

Apparently, my car alarm was going off and I did not realize it.

However, the neighbors did and called the police.

The lady officer then told me that she had responded to a call for the same problem at 5 a.m., Friday morning.

I asked her if she knocked on my door to tell me and she said, "it was Sam."

Ummm? How was I supposed to know there was a problem when no one told me?

I did not hear the alarm and if no one knocks on my door, how am I supposed to know?

I cannot help it if I have a sound proof home.

Ironically, this is the second time I have had the police called on me in this home.

I was so excited to buy this home back in April of this year.

It was a foreclosed home and I got it at a very good price.

There was a lot of work that needed done and still needs to be done, but it was very exciting to finally have a home of my own.

I had been here about a month when there was a knock on my door about 3 a.m., or so on a Saturday night.

The officer said there were complaints about a dog barking.

Upon checking, I found it to be a dog I had just got from a friend who died.

The dog is old and has arthritis and her owner had just died.

The dog was in mourning.

OK, to get to my point, what ever happened to neighborly kindness?

To looking out for your neighbors?

When I was growing up, we did not call the police over such things.

We knocked on the neighbors' door and let them know there was a problem and offered our assistance if they needed help.

If any of my neighbors would have just simply knocked on my door and told me about the problems, I would have taken care of it.

I am a Christian lady and would do anything for anyone.

However, I will not be looking the other way anymore.

To the neighbors who like to fight, cuss and slam doors at 3 a.m., the police will be called.

To the neighbors who like to get drunk and fight with everyone all night long, the police will be called.

To the neighbors who have strange cars coming to their house with their lights off during the late hours of the night, the police will be called.

To the neighbors who like to play the loud music that rattle windows in the afternoon, the police will be called.

And to the neighbors who like to yell at my dogs and taunt them, the police will be called.

One more thing: To the officers who let me know that my car alarm was going off and that it had been going off at 5 a.m., why did you not question the fact that someone may have been stealing my car?

Have we not had car thefts in Clay County recently?
