Readers disgruntled over city's decision

To the editor:

It seems many people in the City of Brazil are unhappy with the decision to discontinue brush, limb, leaf and bagged grass pickup. I am also upset! It is a valuable service which we pay for and became very dependent upon. As I understand it, the city administration discontinued this service for more than one reason:

1. The only working chipper broke down and is irreparable.

2. When they began burning them, the environmentalist complained.

3. We now have five employees versus 15 working for the street department.

Contrary to some information we have all heard, the city will continue to pick up the other recyclables.

I fully appreciate all the services we receive from our small city, especially the street department! I've always felt they go above and beyond. I really believe there are better ways to solve this issue besides simply discontinuing this service.

I'm asking our mayor, city council and the street department supervisor to completely reconsider this issue. There must be a better way to keep our city BEAUTIFUL!

What is going to happen to the brush and bagged leaves laying along the streets? Most residents do not have the money to pay for them to be hauled away.
