Still fresh are memories of summer breaks gone by

Do you remember that silly saying, "School's out, school's out, teacher let the monkeys out" back when you were a kid? I heard it many times back in the day. Summer vacation to my siblings and I meant a break from the usual routine of schoolwork and recesses. No one, at home, ever called us monkeys to our faces, although, we did answer to several pet names. "Little Rascals" sometimes seemed the better choice. We gave up the three R's from the end of May until after Labor Day, for the most part. The exchange was where we often bent the rules. You see, at our place, if we bent the structure rules, instead of a hickory switch or a hardwood paddle, we received a tongue-lashing sermon. Believe me, more than a few sap-filled apple switches left the lower limbs of the old apple tree, expectedly and unexpectedly, too. Instead of the above-mentioned trio of letters and words, we most often heard; "do, do not and did!"
