Brazil native crowned Ms Ohio

Wednesday, June 25, 2014

A Brazil native has been crowned Ms Ohio and will go on to compete in the 2014 Ms United States in Washington D.C.

Dr. Heidi Farid Sprowls is a 1993 graduate of Northview High School and received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from DePauw University in 2001. The daughter of Mary Lou and Rahim Farid, Sprowls moved to Ohio in 2002 and only recently found herself involved in pageantry.

"This is the only pageant I have ever participated in," she said. "A friend encouraged me to do it and it was an exciting challenge."

Winning the crown for Ms Ohio has allowed Farid Sprowls to further her community involvement, including working with Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Good Neighbor House, which provides dental and medical care to individuals who cannot afford treatment.

"I also really enjoy visiting schools and educating children about dental hygiene and prevention of dental decay," Farid Sprowls said.

In order to prepare for her upcoming participation in the Ms United States pageant, Farid Sprowls has been working one on one with a pageant coach to guide her through the ins and outs of pageantry. The national pageant will consist of runway modeling of casual, swim and formal wear as well as an interview conducted by a panel of judges.

"My coach has been helping me prepare for the interviews, and I have been spending some extra time at the gym," she said. "As Ms Ohio, I will have the honor of being in the Independence Day Parade in our nation's capital and I'm so excited about that."

Even though Farid Sprowls has been content about her life in Ohio, she explained that the hardest compromise in her life so far has been leaving Brazil behind.

"I'm very proud of where I came from and the people who made me who I am today," she said. "Brazil has an amazing school and bright educators. I learned a lot from all of them."

As for now, Farid Sprowls is happy wearing both a Ms Ohio crown and her dentistry title.

"I think this is all very exciting," she said. "I have the skill of dentistry to share with my community, and I have a passion for being active and making a difference in the world. I'm 38 years old and every year gets better. I am looking forward to the Ms United States pageant as it is a once in a lifetime experience."

"Even though I am a dentist, I have hobbies and interests beyond that, and I want my daughter to learn that you can be anything you want to be if you work hard enough," she continued.
