Local sorority attends national convention
The 106th National Convention of Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Inc. was July 9-13.
Mary Jane Litz, Lambda Sigma, Phoenix, Arizona, served as Convention Coordinator for the "Delt's Northwest Journey" at The Heathman Lodge, Vancouver, Washington.
National President, Dona Mostafa, Mu Lambda, Stockton, California, presided at the business meetings during the convention. Delegates from 68 chapters were represented. Attending from Brazil's Alpha Omega Chapter were Janice Modesitt, Diane Braden, Kim Emmert-O'Dell, Linda Sheese and Michelle Bell.
A combined total from all chapters donated to philanthropic projects during the past year amounted to $593,330. The members supported their communities with a total of 140,076 volunteer hours during the past year.
Of philanthropic interest to members is the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias and encouraging professionals in the area of Guidance and Counseling. Delta Theta Tau's Educational Grant Program enables students to continue their studies in the graduate field of Guidance and Counseling. The 2014 delegates allotted $5,000 for the educational grants, $5,000 for the National Foundation of Ectodermal Dysplasias and $5,892 to This Able Veteran for the 2015-16 year.
Awards were given to the chapters with the highest total amount of money spent on philanthropy and also for the chapters with the most volunteer hours. Receiving the award for highest amount of money spent for philanthropy was Xi Phi Chapter of Marissa, Illinois. Receiving the award for most volunteer hours spent on philanthropy was Omicron Phi Chapter of Bethel, Missouri. Social activities enjoyed by members included the "The Journey Begins" Mixer, "Rolling Down the Columbia" Informal, and the "Majestic Cascades" Banquet.
Brazil's Alpha Omega Chapter supports philanthropic projects throughout Clay County. During 2013-14, these included assistance to the Clay County Humane Society, the Food Pantry, St. Vincent Clay Hospital ER, Serving on the Streets (SOS), House of Hope and CRADLES. They also provide scholarships in math education and have donated to various local projects including band departments at both county high schools, Habitat for Humanity, YMCA's Strong Kids Campaign, United Way's Power of the Community, Community Theater, Kids Klothes Kloset, Rachel Jones Benefit, Amanda Overshiner Benefit, Hunter Harrison Scholarship Fund, Four Paws Sake and Wabash Valley Breast Cancer Survivors. Their major fund-raisers include cheeseballs, geraniums/hanging baskets, the Taste Treat Luncheon and the Delt Dash 5K Run/Walk.
Delegates elected Beverly Edwards of Lambda Chapter in Tacoma, Washington, to serve as the new National President. She chose as her focus for her year at the helm of the organization, "Making a Difference". Delegates voted to have the 2016 convention in South Bend, Indiana.
Delta Theta Tau, a national philanthropic sorority, was founded in 1903 in Muncie, Indiana, by five high school girls. The first national convention was held in 1908 in Elwood, Indiana. The 107th National Convention will be held July 8-12, 2015, at The Sheraton West Des Moines in West Des Moines, Iowa. Jean Brower, Gamma Pi Chapter, New Paris, Ohio ,will be the convention coordinator.
