The First Clay County Courthouse and Jail

Mr. Hedges contracted to build the original two-story courthouse in 1827, which was a hewn-log building about 24 by 30 feet. It stood on the north side of the street, opposite the public square, east of the old hotel building on the corner. The courtroom was on the lower floor; county officers and the jury used the upper floor.
