Northview will take on Greencastle this evening for a shot at the girls’ sectional championship after the Knights swept past South Putnam, 5-0.
The Knights have some unfinished business to take care of after the Tiger Cubs topped the Knights 4-1 in last year’s title game.
On Thursday evening, Northview cruised past South Putnam in the semifinal a night after sweeping Owen Valley in the sectional opener.
Three of the five matches against South Putnam were 6-0, 6-0 wins by the Knights, who lost just three points overall in the match.
Elle Tipton and Kambree Lucas were 6-0, 6-0 winners for the Knights in singles play. Tipton powered to a win over the Eagles’ Meredith Trump at number one singles and Lucas topped Stephany Zhivotovsky by the same margin. Megan Heck won her number two singles match by a 6-0, 6-1 score against Kaylee Hubbard.
In doubles action, Madison Russell and Emma Clawson teamed for a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Addie Blaydes and Reagan Ladd. Linzy Lunsford and Carleigh Shrader were also 6-0, 6-0 winners for the Knights.
Northview opened postseason play with a 5-0 sweep of visiting Owen Valley on Wednesday evening. The Knights battled not only the Patriots, but also gusting winds and a 30-minute lightning delay before claiming the first step towards a 19th sectional championship.
The sectional match-up went much like the regular season contest as the Knights won four of the five matches in straight sets. The number one doubles team of Madison Russell and Emma Clawson needed an extra set to defeat the Patriots’ Madyson Briggs and Mackenzie Rice just like the regular season match.
Northview got off to a strong start before the weather delay as Heck claimed the first match with a 6-3, 6-0 decision at number two doubles. Heck made quick work of her match with Elizabeth Walcott to put the Knights ahead 1-0. Lunsford and Shrader gave Northview a two-match lead with their 6-2, 6-3 win over Amanda Samick and Jami Harris. Lucas clinched the victory for Northview with a 6-1 6-3 win over Payton Cattorini at number three singles.
With occasional sprinkles coupled with winds gusting over 20 miles per hour, Tipton’s match against Kirsten Norman was in the waning stages as Russell and Clawson’s match went to a third set. Lightning was spotted as the match went into a 30-minute delay before resuming.
Once the match got started once again, Tipton finished off a 6-3, 6-3 victory at number one singles against Kirsten Norman. After losing 6-3, in their first set, Russell and Clawson found their stride and won 6-2, 6-3 to wrap up the victory.
The Knights advanced to face the Tiger Cubs at 5:30 p.m.
