CLAYTON — Northview lead a charmed life on the soccer field Monday evening in a road trip to Cascade High School. The Knights came home with a 1-0 victory as Steven Thomas headed home a rebounded shot from Logan Wright with just two seconds remaining on the clock.

The “charmed” portion of the result came from a handful of missed chances by the Cadets on open nets. Cascade had several opportunities to cash in on high percentage shots during the match, but missed each of them. However, the Knights were the ones to capitalize on their best chance to even their season record at 1-1 overall.

Cascade had the better of the offensive chances in the first 40 minutes, but Knights’ keeper Dylan Boor was more than up to the task.

Boor would make 15 saves on a heavy workload as Cascade took 20 shots on goal overall.

The Cadets got their first chance seven minutes into the match as freshman Jacob Huffer was able to get a close shot off on net, but Boor stifled the chance.

Northview secured its first corner kick at the 16-minute mark as Thomas fired a ball into the box, but Wright’s shot was deflected away. Cascade countered moments later and got off a pair of shots, but the Knights deflected both shots away to keep the match scoreless late into the half.

The best Cadets’ chance to that point came with 16 minutes left in the first half as Huffer hauled in a long pass ahead of the Knights’ defense. Huffer took a couple of dribbles to the right side of the net as Boor came out of net to cut down the angle. Huffer’s shot back to the middle got past Boor, but crept wide left of goal.

A minute later it was defender Gunner Harbison that chipped a ball across the goal mouth right in front of Josh Chattin. The Cadets’ junior had a wide open goal, but got nothing on the shot as Boor recovered in time to make the save.

The Knights had a chance to catch their breaths at intermission and came out firing early in the second half.

Sam Gentry fed a ball along the sideline to Peyton Griffin, who made a run past a Cadet defender, but his shot was saved just a minute into the half. Moments later it was Camden Ringo’s shot on net that was corralled by the Cadet keeper. Gentry had another shot sail wide of goal nine minutes into the half as Northview’s attack was having more success.

Boor was back in action at the midpoint of the half as Zach Deurloo’s corner kick to the goal line was snagged by the Knights’ junior keeper. Three minutes later the Cadets had a free kick that Boor punched high over the goal. The Cadets kept coming as Deurloo’s hard shot moments later looked destined for the net, but Boor made a diving save.

Cascade’s pressure increased over the final 10 minutes as Luke Pierce missed on a close chip shot that Boor got his hands on with four minutes remaining. Just a minute later, it was Deurloo that missed a point blank shot in front of an open goal as his boot went high over the cross bar.

Northview got the opening it needed in the final minute on a free kick with eight seconds left. Wright’s free kick nailed the right side post, but came directly back into the box. The shot caromed to Thomas, who headed home the deciding score.

The Knights are back in action tonight with a home game against West Vigo that will follow the 5 p.m. girls’ match.
