INDIANAPOLIS — North Clay’s cross country teams headed to Indianapolis over the weekend to compete against some of the top teams in the state with outstanding success.

The North Clay girls topped a 13-team field that included perennial powers from Carmel, Westfield and Brownsburg paced by a 1-2 finish from Evie Noel and Briley Shillings. The North Clay boys placed sixth in an equally stacked field of junior high competitors as seventh-grader Drew Cook captured the individual victory.

After opening some eyes in the 2016 Indiana Middle School State Championship Meet, the North Clay girls were more of a known force heading into the meet. Eager to test their mettle against a talented field, the North Clay girls’ team proved dominant with a team score of 26 to easily outdistance Clay (Carmel), which scored 110 points. Zionsville West was third with 112 followed by Hamilton Southeastern Jr. High (119), Carmel 124) and Westfield 192.

Noel edged out Shillings by two seconds at the finish line with a time of 11:14 in the three-kilometer race. However, the team score was dictated by an outstanding team effort as Katie Morrison placed sixth (11:28), Halle Miller was seventh (11:18) and Tierinee Bryan gave the Knights five runners in the top-10 with her time of 11:44. Maisie Eldridge was 12th, Jamison Fisher was 32nd, Piper Brinkman was 41st and Delaney Trout placed 56th in the varsity race that included 128 runners.

Westfield (97 points) took the top team spot with Clay (Carmel) and Zionsville West’s (100 points) junior high squad each tallying 100 points. However, the Knights more than held their own with a sixth-place run (89 points) in the 13-team field.

Cook captured the victory with a time of 10:05.72 to edge Westfield eighth-grader Max Woehler by nearly a second (10:06.69). North Clay teammate Stuart Bennett placed sixth for the Knights in 10:23.53 with Christian Roembke placing 32nd in 11:16. Jared Parkey (50th, 11:36) and Braxton Mercer (51st, 11:38.95) were followed by sixth-graders Douglas Dillman (67th, 11:52) and Andrew Siples (68th, 11:55). Gavin Jones was 73rd for the varsity Knights with Miles Haviland in 78th in the 122 runner field.
