Police continue to investigate a shooting Tuesday that left one person dead and another in critical condition.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reports that Mark Thomas, 62, died from a single gunshot wound, while his wife, Tammy Thomas, 59, remains in critical condition at a Terre Haute hospital after being shot multiple times.

Emergency responders were called to 9415 N. Forest View Drive in Brazil Tuesday night after receiving a 911 call from a frantic female indicating she had been shot multiple times, according to the CCSO.

Officers were quickly dispatched to the home in Colony Acres subdivision and found Tammy Thomas on the garage floor with serious injuries from being shot multiple times in the torso.

Police also worked to search the home and found Mark Thomas unresponsive in the living room. He had suffered a single gunshot wound and was later pronounced dead at the scene by Clay County Coroner Nick French.

Tammy Thomas was transported by CARE Ambulance to St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil, then taken by helicopter to Regional Hospital in Terre Haute due to her injuries.

The CCSO reports Tammy Thomas underwent surgery for several hours and is currently out of surgery and in critical condition.

The investigation continues today as officers are still on the scene.

Due to the nature of the incident, Indiana State Police Crime Scene Technicians were called to assist in gathering evidence. Also assisting the sheriff’s office were the Brazil Police Department, Putnam County Operation Life and the Brazil City Fire Department.

  • We here in Brazil sure have had our share of mayhem lately. A few weeks ago, the kidnapping plus standoff. Now this. The world has gone mad!

Looks like either a home invasion or murder (attempted) / suicide. Pray for the families. These kinds of things hurt people far beyond the range of those bullets.
