CLAY COUNTY THROUGH THE YEARS: Library will be 139 years old

The Brazil Public Library Association hired Lizzie Herr to open the library to subscribers for the first time on June 6, 1879. A small room at the back of Mayor Collins’ office served as the first of many locations of the library. Due to lack of funds, the library was frequently unheated and often staffed by volunteers, usually board members. The library became free to the public in 1884 in order to collect the tax funds. When Mrs. Crawford heard of Andrew Carnegie’s generosity to libraries, she went to New York personally, for more information.
