Clay City runners in top form at three-way meet with Vikings, T-Birds

West Vigo came away with a sweep of a three-way track and field meet with Clay City and North Central on Thursday evening. The Vikings got three individual wins from sprinter Ethan Roach to score 76.5 points to Clay City’s 55.5. North Central placed third with 24 points.

In the boys’ portion of the meet, Roach paced a Viking sweep of the top spot of the short and middle distance events with wins in the 100 meters (11.34), 200 meters (22.24) and 400 (53.74). Jarrett Scott was the 800 meter winner for the Vikings.

Clay City had its share of strong efforts as Devin Thurmond broke the school-record in the 200 meters with his time of 23.24 to place second in the event. Thurmond was also second in the 100 meters to place just ahead of teammate Bryce Patterson in the event.

Senior Calvin Fry also had a big meet with a victory in the 1,600 meters (4:53) and a runner-up spot in the 800 (2:10.70) as Eli Hostetler was third. Hostetler also gave Clay City a second-place in the high jump by clearing six-feet.

Kyle Wolf picked up a victory in the 3,200 meters (11:06) for Clay City and Carter Dickson was third. Sam Lucas finished second in the 300 hurdles with Keaton Butts second in the long jump. Aaron Buell won the shot put event with a heave of 40-feet, five inches. He was also third in the discus. The 4x100 relay was a fraction off of the school record on its way to winning the event.

The Viking girls edged out the Eels 73 to 57.5 as North Central was third with 19.5 points on Thursday evening.

Andrea Steward got the evening rolling on a high note for Clay City as she narrowly missed a school-record while winning the 100 meters (12.44). She was also a third behind teammate Emily Hyatt in the 200 meters. Hyatt finished in 29.74 as West Vigo’s Morgan Weir won in 29.04. Hyat was also a third-place finisher in the 100 meters.

Lauren Thomas put forth a dominant effort in the 800 meters by finishing in 2:43 to win by 10 seconds. The versatility of Avalee Jeffers was on full display as the senior won the 100 hurdles (18.54), 300 hurdles (52.84) and the high jump by clearing five-feet, two inches. Alexis Laswell was the 3,200 meter winner in 13:10 and Hannah Colburn was the long jump winner with a jump of 14-4 1/2. The Eels also got a victory from their 4x100 relay team. Sarah Mann was the runner-up in both the discus (82-8) and shot put (28-0).
