Clay County Post 2 continued to roll in its home opener in American Legion baseball Wednesday evening. The squad improved to 6-0 overall this season by topping Richmond Post 65 by an 8-2 score.

Zeke Newton threw five solid innings for Clay County, allowing just one run and three hits while striking out five. He was able to keep the visitors off balance for much of the game after Richmond scored a first inning run buoyed by a Clay County error.

Clay County went scoreless in its first at-bat, but got going through the middle stages of the nine inning contest.

In the second inning, Post 2 came up with some two-out magic after Richmond hurler Cade Johnson retired the first two hitters via strikeouts. Hunter Adams and Bailey Hasler reached on errors to set the plate. Kade Roembke drew a walk to load the bases for Benjamin Goshen, who came through with a two-run single to right field.

Clay County's Korbin Allen drove in a run, reached base twice and stole two bases in Wednesday's win over Richmond.

The third inning provided some insurance runs for Newton as Korbin Allen drew a walk and stole second base. Newton walked and Jacob LaFary smacked a RBI base hit to center field. After Johnson retired the next two Post 2 hitters, Bailey Hasler lifted a two-run bloop single that found grass in centerfield for a 5-1 Clay County lead.

Newton found a rhythm after the first inning and struck out four hitters over the third and fourth innings before Richmond got a pair of fifth inning base hits. However, Newton coaxed a ground ball out from Dalton Scott to get out of the jam and keep Post 2 on top 5-1.

Clay County played add on in the bottom half of the inning as LaFary walked and was balked to second base by relief pitcher Dalton Scott. Hunter Adams followed with an RBI single before being thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. Hasler followed with his second hit and moved into scoring position via a wild pitch. Kade Roembke came through with a run scoring base hit to push the home squad’s lead to 7-1.

In the sixth frame, Clay County added its final run as Brevan Cooper reached on an error and Allen followed with a RBI double.

Hasler came in to relief Newton and pitched two innings, allowing a single run before Jace Harper closed out the victory by sitting Richmond down in order.
