There is strength in numbers this season for the Northview girls golf program this fall. The Knights are 12 golfers strong, the highest in several years, and the team returns four of its sectional golfers from a fifth-place finish last season.

Head golf coach Josh Trout is looking forward to working with a team that boasts plenty of depth with its top-four golfers back in the fold.

“Compared to last year it is nice to have girls competing for spots. It gives the girls a little more of a challenge in practice,” Trout said. “We didn’t have any seniors last year, which really helps us out. We have a lot of experience and we have got some strong freshmen that will help out the lineup. It gives us a little more balance. I am looking forward to the season. I think we have a lot of potential.”

The Knights had their first match canceled due to rain, but got back on track Thursday afternoon with a season opening duel win over Monrovia, 186 to 194.

Senior Sophia Buell watches a putt during her round of 44 that led the Knights on Thursday evening at Forest Park Golf Course.

Senior Sophia Buell carded a 44 to lead the Knights to the win.

“Sophia is a great leader. This is her fourth year of varsity,” Trout said of Buell. “She is a great role model for the other girls, especially the freshmen that are coming along.”

Junior Heidi Ehrlich shot a 46 for Northview with classmate Abby Drake shooting a 47 followed by a 49 from freshman Brooklee Bussing and a 50 from senior JoJo Allen.

Despite some uneven weather issues created by rain during the middle of the week, Trout was happy to see some balanced scores from his varsity lineup on Thursday.

“We wanted four scores in the 40’s. This was a rough week with the rain,” Trout admitted. “We missed one match and a practice, but overall, 186 for our first match is pretty solid for us. It is something for us to build on.”

Trout also noted that the North Clay club golf team is reaping some benefits for the high school program now with incoming freshman boasting more experience than ever before.

“Randy Dragon is a real help with (North Clay’s club team). Randy spearheads that whole thing with the boys and girls, Trout said. “It is great that they learn the rules and golf etiquette so by the time they get to (Northview boys’) Coach (Chris) DeHart and I, it takes the pressure off us as far as that is concerned. So I really appreciate that.”
