Letter to the Editor

You’re invited to fun meeting on Tuesdays

Sunday, July 28, 2019

Every week at noon on Tuesday, there is a group of weird people who meet in the basement of the St. Vincent Medical Building in the Community Room.

I think that the fine people of Brazil have a right to know about this group of strange people. See, you likely don’t know much about them, because their numbers are small. But I can assure you that this group is full blown crazy, every single one of them.

They delight in the thing that most people dread. They practice public speaking. And they have FUN. They actually laugh while they learn and make mistakes. They call themselves Toastmasters, but I’ve yet to see any toast at their meetings.

But that’s not where their peculiarity ends. This group of people does something that is extremely rare in this world these days. They build each other up. They support each other. They give freely of idea and coffee and food and fellowship. They welcome all types. Instead of criticizing each other, they have a genuine desire to see each other succeed.

When one of them is troubled, they offer support. When one of them is happy, they rejoice with them. When one of them is on vacation or away for work for family, they are sorely missed.

I must confess that the reason I know about this group is because I’m one of them.

And it gets stranger yet: I am writing this letter because I sincerely hope that you will join us in our insanity.

Yes, you, person reading this letter with a smile. Yes, you, person reading this letter thinking that you normally just eat lunch at your desk - I want you to bring your lunch and give us a shot.

Yes, you, person feeling even the slightest bit curious. Yes, you, person who was just thinking that they needed something to look forward to on Tuesdays.

Please, join our wacky group, it just might change your life!

It did mine.

Sincerely,

Heather Killie
