UPDATED - One person killed and another injured in Thursday crash

A Brazil resident died and an unidentified person was injured in an accident Thursday evening on the Cory/Staunton Road near State Road 42.

A 911 caller reported a vehicle had left the roadway and struck a utility pole around 8:42 p.m.

Upon arrival, first responders found the passenger of the vehicle walking around in a confused state. The unidentified passenger was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for treatment. Due to the state confidentiality regulations are known as HIPPA Regulations, further information regarding the passenger’s condition is not available at this time.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Anthony Moran, 32, of Brazil, was found trapped in the vehicle. As a result of injuries sustained from the crash, Moran was pronounced dead on the scene by Clay County Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy was requested by local officials and performed on Friday at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. However, Coroner Nick French explained the pending results will take at least a couple of weeks before completed and an official announcement would be made.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing. However, deputies believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors to the crash.

First responders working the accident scene included Posey Volunteer Fire Department, STAR Ambulance, Clay County Sheriff’s Department, and the Clay County Coroner’s Office.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department released information on Friday afternoon about a fatal accident on Thursday evening.

First Responders were dispatched to a vehicle accident on Cory/Staunton Road near State Road 42 around 8:42 p.m. Thursday.

Upon arrival, first responders found the passenger of the vehicle walking around in a confused state. The unidentified passenger was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Anthony Moran, 32, of Brazil, was found trapped in the vehicle. As a result of injuries sustained from the crash, Moran was pronounced dead on the scene by Clay County Coroner’s Office.
