TOP STORY OF THE DAY: 53 cases, 3 deaths and Clay County's rank in District 7

On Wednesday, Clay County Public Health Nurse Kim Hyatt confirmed the third death reported on the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) COVID-19 website.

Hyatt said the local resident had been hospitalized for the illness, same as the other two reported deaths from the virus. Further details are not available due to the Federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

The total of COVID-19 positive cases in Clay County gained another Thursday, with the total now at 53. One person is reported hospitalized.

Of the COVID-19 cases reported in Clay County, Hyatt confirmed the patients are in various stages of the recovery process, with 21 still in self-isolation at home. The others already recovered.

In the Wabash Valley, the ISDH data shows Clay County is near the middle of the ranking for COVID-19 positive cases when considering neighboring counties in District 7.

The eight counties included are:

• VIGO - 178 Positive Cases among the 2,950 tested, with eight deaths.

• GREENE - 172 Positive Cases among the 1,110 tested, with 25 deaths.

• PUTNAM - 142 Positive Cases among the 1,559 tested, with seven deaths.

• CLAY - 53 Positive Cases among the 980 tested, with three deaths.

• SULLIVAN - 37 Positive Cases among the 913 tested, with one death.

• OWEN - 34 Positive Cases among the 846 tested, with one death.

• PARKE - 18 Positive Cases among the 433 tested, with no deaths reported.

• VERMILLION - 10 Positive Cases among the 388 tested, with no deaths reported.

The ISDH reports 36,096 positive cases among the 6.7 million Indiana residents, with 285,234 residents tested, and 2,052 deaths reported. The state’s data suggests of the Indiana residents tested, approximately 12.7 percent of Indiana residents are confirmed positive as of Thursday, June 4.

Indiana residents whose deaths a physician listed COVID-19 as a contributing cause are diagnosed based on X-rays, scans, and other clinical symptoms with an absence of a COVID-19 test. There are none reported in Clay County at this time. However, the ISDH website shows 179 throughout the state.
