BLOG: ‘Where have all the flowers gone?’ How about kindness?

Back (way back) when I was a teenager there was a folk song made popular by Pete Seeger. It was one of my favorites. I played it on my guitar and belted it out. Sometimes my Dad would sneak in some harmony while Pete (and I) crooned the question, “Where have all the flowers gone? Long time passing! Where have all the flowers gone? Long time ago! Where have all the flowers gone? Girls have picked them every one. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?” The song goes on to say that young girls have gone, for they’ve taken husbands, every one. The husbands have gone, for they’ve gone for soldiers, every one. The soldiers have gone, for they’ve taken to graveyards, every one. And of course, the graveyards are covered with flowers, every one. It’s really pretty sad, but read your history books, folks, and you’ll know that during the 1960’s protesting in song was a popular thing to do.
