LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Holiday greetings from CCS superintendent

Tuesday, November 24, 2020

CCS Community Members:

It would be an understatement to say that 2020 has had its share of trials and tribulations. Most of us are looking forward to 2021 and hoping it will be less “eventful”. During difficult times, it can become easy for us to think that these are the worst of times, and it can become difficult to deflect all the negativity that surrounds us; however, with just a cursory study of history, we are quickly reminded that mankind has witnessed many extremely challenging times.

A short excerpt from a Presidential Thanksgiving Proclamation may help to bring a historical perspective to our present situation. This proclamation was written by one of the most, if not the most, divisive U.S. presidents in American history, and his words are as follows:

“The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God.......”

Not only were these words written by a very polarizing American president, they were written as a Thanksgiving Proclamation during the most contentious time in our country’s history – The American Civil War – during which some 620,000 Americans perished! History also proved that this “divisive” president came to be one of the most, if not the most, beloved, honored, and respected presidents in American history – Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln’s words were true in 1863, and they still ring true today. Yes, we are in the midst of very challenging times, yet, we, as Americans, are extremely blessed and fortunate! Even with the present pandemic and social unrest which permeate the airwaves and social media, our blessings outweigh and outnumber our trials.

Covid-19 is a vivid reminder of the importance and value of family, friends, school, church, and community.

During Thanksgiving, which ushers in the Christmas season, I hope you will pray for our school corporation, community, and country, and let us not forget to give thanks for our countless blessings during this wonderful time of the year.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Jeff Fritz, Superintendent
