The search for a stolen vehicle out of Vigo County led to a pursuit in Clay County that locked down two schools Thursday morning.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, an active GPS (Global Positioning System) in the stolen truck was used to locate it on State Road 42 near County Road 300 West. When deputies attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to stop and accelerated at a high rate of speed to get away north on CR 300W.

As the pursuit continued through the Turner area, the driver attempted to avoid the deputies by leaving the road.

The search continued used the GPS, which led the officers to the Clearview Cemetery area.

With the officers converging in the area to look for the suspect, the Clay Community School corporation was made aware of the situation. As a result, both Northview and North Clay Middle schools were placed on lockdown to ensure the students’ and staff’s safety.

A search of the Clearview Cemetery turned up nothing, but more data from the GPS led officers to Cottage Hill Cemetery. They found the abandoned truck and started to deploy K-9 Units to begin tracking.

However, before the K-9 units began, the driver was located walking east on County Road 950 North. The driver was identified as Trey Blaine, 24, Terre Haute. A passenger, Robert Nagy, 29, Terre Haute, was located walking east on State Road 340. Both were taken into custody without incident.

Assisting the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was the Brazil City Police Department, Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, and the Indiana State Police.

Both men were arrested on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting law enforcement and booked into the Clay County Justice Center to await formal court proceedings. It is unclear at this time what charges will be filed in Vigo County.
