Shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday, first responders were dispatched to an accidental structure fire where three people jumped out a window at 228 East Kruzan Street.

Brazil Fire Chief Jake Bennett said when firefighters arrived with the first engine; flames were covering the front porch, window, door, and stairway leading to the upstairs apartment.

“Just before we made the scene, the occupants jumped from the rear second-story window to the ground,” said Bennett, confirming officers of the Brazil City Police, Clay County Sheriffs Department, along with neighbors helped to evacuate other occupants in the building. “Firefighters got a quick knockdown on the fire and continued putting out hot spots in the overhang and roof and stairway landing.”

The apartment residents were treated on the scene and released by STAR Ambulance. No other injuries were reported during the incident.

Significant heat and smoke damage were sustained to the apartment and its contents, while Bennett said the other apartments were “virtually unaffected other than a smoky smell.”

The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the tenants of the apartment.

No other apartments were structurally damaged during a fire Sunday evening at the apartments at 228 East Kruzan Street.
