Northview wraps up season at Washington Regional
Disappointed by his team’s performance at Monday’s Terre Haute North Sectional held at Hulman Links Golf Course, Northview boys golf head coach Nick McCollum stopped himself from acknowledging the difficulty of getting past Thursday afternoon’s Washington Regional held at Country Oaks Golf Course.
While answering the question posed to him about the chances of the Knights continuing their season another week, which would mean a top-three regional finish and a state championship appearance, McCollum paused and looked at the Hulman Links clubhouse.
Seated in the patio section was his team, one he’s seen consistently improve over the last several years as the program’s assistant coach and this spring as the team’s head coach. McCollum then stated that if his group could play up to their standards, regardless of the daunting task that is Country Oaks Golf Course, Northview could keep pace with some of the state’s top competition.
What would need to happen to ensure the Knights gave themselves that chance? McCollum said Lane Notter, who was the sectional low medalist with a round of 72, would have to play well again and the other four in the lineup – Aydan Green, Lincoln Pierce, Kamden Kellett and Porter Frederick – would need to shoot in the mid-80s.
And for the most part, the plan came to fruition as Northview (329) finished in front of its sectional opponents, but ultimately placed ninth behind only Evansville North (291), Bloomington South (297), Castle (306), Gibson Southern (309), Jasper (311), Brownstown Central (319), Evansville Mater Dei (323) and Vincennes Lincoln (324), bringing an end to its season.
Notter led the Knights in his final match representing Northview, carding a 78, which put the senior standout six shots away from qualifying for next week’s state finals as an individual from a non-advancing team. Behind Notter was Pierce (80), Green (82), Frederick (89) and Kellett (94).
