Playing in the 15 Elite Division National Championship in the 51st annual AAU Junior National Volleyball Championship Tournament in Orlando, Florida, the Crossroads of America (COA) Gophers, a travel volleyball program based out of Terre Haute that is made up of players from Northview, Terre Haute North, Covington, Edgewood, Sullivan, Shakamak and Marshall, all of whom have been playing alongside each othe for the last few years, knew it had to run through a gauntlet to leave with the hardware they were hoping to bring home.

The Gophers, one of 129 teams that entered the tournament, went a perfect 12-0 over the course of the four-day event, beating teams from Atlanta, Houston, Columbus, St. Louis and Puerto Rico, to win the first national championship in COA club history.

Among the players on the national championship-winning team? Northview’s Alex Strahla.

The soon-to-be sophomore, who spent most of her first high school season with the sectional championship-winning Lady Knights as a serving specialist, contributed in a big way as one of the Gophers’ outside hitters, a place she is likely to step into this upcoming fall for Northview.

Not only did the Gophers bring home the club’s first-ever national championship, they also improved their record to a jaw-dropping 72-3
