Friday, June 28, 2024

Traffic throughout Clay County on Thursday afternoon was chaotic after westbound traffic on I-70 was diverted at mile marker 23 due to a tragic semi-versus-pedestrian accident around 2:30 a.m.

Indiana State Police was dispatched to the area amid heavy fog to investigate the accident.†

Officials urged caution in the area as traffic congestion became heavy. The heavy traffic affected State Roads 59 and 42 as motorists continued to find alternate routes to their destinations. The heavy traffic also found its way to Brazil and State Road 40 throughout Thursday morning.

Details about the investigation are not available yet.

The details about the death of the pedestrian are not available at this time due to the pending investigation and notification to the family.

Around 10 a.m., ISP announced the roads were back open. However, the traffic congestion continued for a while.

In December 2023, another walking pedestrian was struck and killed in the same location by a red passenger car in the evening, around 8:15 p.m.†

The Clay County Coronerís Office positively identified the first victim as Fredy Ramos Escobar of Kansas City, Kansas.

In January, the Indiana State Police requested public assistance about this case.
