Good news: Blessing Box in place to help hungry pets

Thursday, July 4, 2024

Compassion for animals is something Brazil residents excel at. So much so that when a local social media site members were posting pictures of numerous animals lost, abandoned/dumped or in need of medical assistance, a local resident was moved to action.

“A picture of a pet box was shared on Facebook by our Aunt Helen (Muenier) and she inquired about one possibly being put somewhere,” says May-gan Okulovich, adding her pet loving family rose to the challenge and made the Pet Blessing Box a reality. “It was a family project for sure.”

Okulovich felt it was an important project for the community and the growing pet population running the streets.

”This is important to the community because times are hard right now for everyone and Brazil has a lot of dogs running free and skinny,” said Okulovich about the obvious reason; families are struggling to feed and care for their pets. “Hopefully, with the communities help with donations, it will help some of these families feed their animals. We also hope it helps the Humane shelter by cutting down on the amount of animals they have to bring in because people can’t afford to take care of them.”

The first Pet Blessing Box was built and placed at Launch Academy, 100 North Forest Avenue, Brazil, in mid-June.

It works exactly like the food Blessing Boxes around town. Any time of the day, if you need some pet food, take it, and try to pass on the favor by leaving pet food, treats and other pet products for those in need.

According to PetSmart Charities, an estimated 70% of American households include at least one pet.

If families face hunger so do their pets.

The Humane Society of the United States recent research showed that approximately 20 million U.S. pets experience poverty along with their families, and 43% of all pet owners struggle to pay for their pets’ needs due to financial reasons.

Furthermore, 9 in 10 Americans (90%) say that it is important to have support similar to those for adults impacted by poverty and inequality like shelters and community organizations available for pets in need.

While providing preschool children with valuable skills they need to enter school and life, the lesson of taking care of animals is an equally valuable one for children, and adults.

The location at Launch Academy is ready for donations. However, there are some rules you need to know:

It is recommended to not put full bags of food in the box, but break the foodbags down into gallon bags.

Do not put fresh food out of fear of spoilage from the heat.

Food can be donated for any type of animal, but might need to be labeled.

  • Thank you to whomever built and placed this much needed Blessing Box for pets that are in need of food. Pets are deserving of food and care just like humans.
