Post 2 blows out Bloomfield in midweek battle

Tuesday, July 9, 2024

Despite having an eight-day break in between games, Clay County Post 2 showed no signs of rust in Monday night’s game against Bloomfield Post 196.

After going down in order in the top of the first inning, Post 2 strung together four straight run-scoring innings to beat up on Bloomfield’s pitching, winning by a score of 15-5 in six innings to extend its winning streak to a season-best three games.

In the win, six – Wyatt Johnson, Trey Dayhoff, Logan Stoelting, Noah Atkinson, Brayden Kreiger and Gavin McMains – of the nine hitters recorded at least one hit, two of whom – Dayhoff and Kreiger – recorded multi-hit games to lead the offensive attack for the visitors while eight of the nine scored at least one run.

Dayhoff and Wyatt Johnson each recorded a double in the win while Logan Stoelting hit his first home run of the summer. On the base paths, Clay County ran wild. Post 2 piled up 12 stolen bases with Kreiger swiping three, Brody Shaw, Mason Camp, Stoelting and Johnson taking two apiece and Dayhoff stealing one.

On the mound, it was Atkinson that got the ball to begin the game. The Clay City graduate surrendered five runs on three hits and four walks while striking out four over the first three innings, which were enough for him to earn the win. He then handed it off to Stoelting who closed the door with two shutout innings that saw him strike out four batters as well.

Clay County Post 2 was scheduled to take on Terre Haute Post 346 for a midweek game on Tuesday but the storms that swept through the Wabash Valley squashed the possibility of the two locking horns for the first time in a half decade. Instead, Clay County will look ahead to the Crawfordsville Post 72 Wood Bat Tournament hosted at North Montgomery High School that takes place on Thursday-Sunday.
