THELMA JEAN HAYHURST Poland, IN
Thelma Jean Hayhurst was born January 17 1943. She was the only daughter of Fred and Lenna Kieffaber. She grew up on the family farm in Poland Indiana. Went to Cloverdale High School and graduated in 1962. Thelma worked after high school as a butcher in the Poland grocery store, and Mallorys in Greencastle.
In May of 1977 she married George Hayhurst, who worked for the corps of engineers at Cagles Mill Dam. They enjoyed life on of the family farm with: canning, cooking, and their two basset hounds. Thelma remained at the farm until George’s death in January of 1999. After George’s death, Thelma moved to the city of Brazil and lived there another 22 years. In 2008 she was diagnosed with cancer and with treatment remained cancer free. She loved doing a little traveling, her country western music, gardening, reading and jig saw puzzles.
In October 2021 Thelma, because of her advancing stages of Alzheimer’s, went to Texas with her family. She passed away at Autumn Leaves Memory Facility in Houston Texas Sunday July 21st, 2024.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to your local cancer society or the Clay County Humane Society in her honor.
Services for Thelma will be at Poland Cemetery Church on Tuesday, August 27th, at 10:30 a.m.
