After winning the Western Indiana Conference championship in dominating fashion, Northview’s girls golf team had five days off before welcoming Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South to Forest Park Golf Course for what many around the Wabash Valley deemed a sectional preview.

Northview (181) split the tri-way match with the Braves (164) and Patriots (190) last week and then went into a seven-day break from match play immediately afterwards.

That ended on Thursday when Edgewood paid a visit to Brazil for a dual match.

Northview put up a score of 193, which wasn’t where the team wanted to be, said head coach Chris Hawk. But it was good enough to down the Mustangs (198) by five shots and keep the Lady Knights’ unbeaten record in dual matches intact, an achievement the second-year leader of the program wanted his team to understand was a big deal.

“Our team score was 193, so not exactly where we wanted it to be, but it also could have been a lot worse,” said Hawk. “Edgewood had a 198, so we are still undefeated in dual matches this fall, which I told the girls was a very good thing and something to hold their heads up about.”

Mia Tribble (46), Kailee James (47) and Amber Moreland (48) each finished two strokes apart from each other to lead the way for Northview while Maci Brimberry (52) and Marley Baumgartner (53), who’s scores were also bunched up together, rounded out the scoring for the hosts.

Afterwards, Hawk delivered a message of positivity to his team. While he – and the team as whole – want to continuously see improvements made in their game leading into the postseason, Hawk didn’t want it to be lost on them that they were the team leaving the golf course victorious on Thursday. And if they can keep that same mindset over the next couple of weeks, he sees a strong sectional tournament for his group.

“I told them that they may not have scored the lowest they could have tonight, but sometimes you have to fall down a little bit before you can get back up stronger,” Hawk said. “We’re still very optimistic heading into sectional preparation in the next two weeks.”
