Lady Knights come up short in loss to Crawfordsville
If one game could serve as a microcosm for a four-game stretch of the girls high school soccer season, Saturday’s 7-2 loss to Crawfordsville might’ve done just that for Northview.
The Lady Knights showed glimpses of stellar play – just as they did in Monday’s win over West Vigo and in Tuesday’s loss to Edgewood in penalty kicks – but also had moments where their inexperience and lack of execution reared its ugly head – just as it did in Thursday’s loss to Monrovia.
It left Northview head coach Don Bryan encouraged with the team’s strengths while also giving him a closer look into the areas that need to be shorn up before the regular season comes to a close at the end of the month.
“Maybe I’m expecting too much, but the potential is there,” said Bryan. “I think we have the right game plan, but today, I just didn’t think they were focused for whatever reason. We have the right personnel to do [what we want to do]. It’s just a matter of execution during a rough stretch for us.”
Northview held the majority of Crawfordsville’s roster in check on Saturday. However, junior midfielder Caroline Novak, who entered the game with five goals through the first 11 games of the year, doubled her season total by recording a glut, otherwise known as scoring five goals in a single game.
Bryan tipped his cap to the play of Novak but was frustrated with the way one player single-handedly changed the complexation of the game.
“We knew who we needed to mark, but we let her get open too many times. She made us pay and we knew she was going to if we left her open,” said Bryan. “I just don’t like getting beat by one player.”
Northview leading goal scorer Addi Modglin found the back of the net twice with two goals of her own, and nearly had herself a hat trick or haul (four goals in the game) to match Novak. But as Bryan noted, the Knights simply didn’t have the kind of offensive attack on Saturday to overcome one player scoring five times.
“We had some opportunities,” said Bryan. “It’s just a matter of consistency and taking care of what we can control. I mean, we had several opportunities where if we body the ball, we likely get goals. That’s what’s frustrating.”
With four games left to go before the sectional gets underway in October, which includes Monday’s standalone game against South Vermillion, the Lady Knights can see the end of the regular season rapidly approaching. Bryan said Saturday’s loss served as a reminder of what Northview will need to get straightened out to bring home some more hardware for their trophy case.
“This game will give me some stuff to chirp on,” said Bryan. “There were things we did well and there were things we need to work on. In the long run, when we watch the tape from today, there are things that will show that will help us.”
