Accident involves child walking to school
Officials were grateful an accident Tuesday morning was “not as bad as it could have been.”
Brazil Police Department officials received lots of help when the call went out that a child was hit while walking to school near National Avenue and Vandalia Street.
Details are limited, and no names are available about what has been described as an avoidable accident if the “motorist was just paying attention.”
According to officials, the accident occurred around 7:30 p.m. at a stop sign, where a driver failed to yield to a 10-year-old pedestrian walking across Vandalia going to school. When the car, which was stopped at the stop sign, turned, the 77-year-old driver allegedly hit the child.
Members of the Brazil Fire Department and STAR Ambulance treated the child and released them into the custody of the child’s parents. The parents informed officials at the scene that they would transport the child to a local hospital for further evaluation.
The elderly female driver sustained no injuries but was ticketed for the accident and released from the scene.
The BPD confirmed that other agencies at the scene included two Clay County Sheriff’s Department officers and one Indiana State Police officer.
“When it comes to a child being involved in an accident, many nearby agencies respond,” said Assistant Police Chief Dennis Archer about the incident.
