KAROLYN JO (SHERFEY) KERR, Brazil, IN
Karolyn Jo (Sherfey) Kerr, 84, of Brazil, Indiana went to join her Lord and Savior in Heaven on September 23, 2024. She passed peacefully in her sleep at home.
Karolyn was born on 7/24/1940 in Brazil, Indiana to Anita (Tribble) Sherfey and David Sherfey. She was a 1959 graduate of Brazil High School. Karolyn graduated from Indiana State College in 1963 with a Education Degree. She was honored with the Theta Alpha Phi Honor award as an undergraduate based on her outstanding work in the Drama Department. Karolyn also completed her Master’s Degree in Education at Indiana State University.
For her career, Karolyn initially taught high school Speech and English courses in Flint, Michigan for almost 4 years. She then moved back to Brazil in 1968 to begin teaching English, Speech and Drama at Brazil High School, later renamed Northview High School. While teaching at BHS, she directed the high school plays and musicals. Karolyn taught a total of 36 years and retired in 2002. Many former students accredited their success in college to her unique teaching abilities.
Karolyn married the love of her life, Richard W. Kerr, on July 21, 1973. They remained married until his death on August 22, 2005.
Preceding Karolyn in death besides her husband, were her wonderful parents, many other beloved family members and precious pets that are now rejoicing in Heaven with her.
Survivors include her loving sister, Diane (Sherfey) Lawson of Brazil, who took care of Karolyn the last 11 years of her life. Other local surviving family members that she dearly loved were nephews David Woodall of Greenwood, IN, John Lawson of Brazil, IN, niece Bethany Jo “Buffy” Phyne of Noblesville, IN and great-niece Arden Woodall of Indianapolis, IN.
Also surviving are several wonderful, caring extended family members in the Brazil area, Pennsylvania and New York, including special niece, Annie (Watkins) Fenton and loved nephews, John Watkins Jr. and Justin Niles.
Because Karolyn did not have children of her own, she constantly doted on her family by making every event and celebration special for them.
Per Karolyn’s wishes, Moore Funeral Home has been entrusted with her cremation arrangements. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, which will be published.
In lieu of flowers, Karolyn requested that donations be made to the Clay County Humane Society, as she loved her dogs, Brandy Jo and Missy Jo, and cats, Sox, Lucy and Gypsy so very much. Online condolences may be expressed at www.moorefuneralhomes.com.
