He was born Jan. 8, 1916, in Clay County to John and Emmay Croft Shonk. He was a member of the Good Hope Baptist Church and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, trapping and hunting ginseng.
He is survived by his loving wife, Thelma Juanita Horton; a brother, John Henry Shonk, of Coal City; several nieces and nephews; and a large extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lewis Shonk; three sisters, Hallie Miller, Margaret Shonk, Nora Ruth Shonk and a brother in infancy.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2006, in the Schoppenhorst Funeral Home with the Rev. Nathan Couch officiating. Visitation will be 4-8;00 p.m., Monday, June 26, in the funeral home.
