Resident reflects on several topics, old and new

To the Editor:

Recently, Richard Floyd and Pat Kneirim passed away.

Also Mark Williams -- I knew Mark Williams only as a friend to my nephew Larry Gorman, who passed away a few years back.

Anyway, I knew all three of these men. My condolences go out to their families.

I would also like to commend the police, the county, the Sheriff's Dept., Fire Dept., volunteers and anybody who helped out in the recent floods. They go above and beyond the call of duty.

Old days -- I used to think restaurants or cafes, had weird names in my days. Names like Cokehaven, Knotty Pine, Silver Star, B-29, Sugar Bowl, Roma, etc.

But these made more sense than some of the names I see today.

Names like Simple Pleasures, Come and Get It, Company's Coming Dining House, Sisters In Time, Rusty Nail, etc. All history.

Some of the present ones have weird names too, like Simply Decadent, Lucio's, Simplicity, Coffee Cup, Brazil Coffee Co., etc.

One of the best restaurants going today in Brazil is Eddie's.

They serve lunch anytime and breakfast anytime unlike some places where you can only get breakfast between 6-11 a.m.

Some places only serve lunch between 11 a.m.-2 p.m. That puts me in mind of those tea rooms that used to be in Brazil.

Anyway, I like Eddie's. They are a good group of people.

On to the next subject.

I have been writing about this subject off and on for the last 10 or 11 years and I guess I have been wasting my time. I used to talk about what this town needs. Now I'm saying what it could use and it's very unlikely that it will.

Still today, this town could have some new industry, some bigger and better stores, something worth going to. Not some local specialty or novelty shop. It needs some new entertainment, like a new movie theater. Princeton has a four-screen movie theater showing four new releases with matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Rockport has a five-screen drive-in theater with four screens showing two movies apiece and one screen showing all new releases.

Brazil? One theater. One screen. Three days a week. New releases. No R-rated movies. No matinees. Don't tell me. I already know.

The bureaucrats who run this town won't support it.

If anything new does come, it usually goes in the east end of town. Convenient for the eastenders. What about the westenders?

We could use some big business in this end too. From the west of Walnut on down to the city limits. Maybe even past the limits.

Gossip columns. Even I can write a gossip column.

If this letter gets published in time, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Fourth of July and have fun at the Rotary Celebration.

My next three letters will be about Terre Haute, Rockville and cell phones. A real true story.
