Letter to the Editor

Readers disagree over hot topic

To the Editor:

This is a response to ("Be careful what you wish for," which appeared in the Oct. 6 issue of The Brazil Times).

If our culture cannot learn to respect the life of a human being in the safest place in the world, the mother's womb, then how do we expect that the life of the elderly, handicapped, people that look different, or perhaps even people that think differently will be respected?

Will they be treated like the unborn infant? Will their life be terminated because they cause inconvenience or no longer contribute to society -- according to society's definition of "contribution?" About 14 years ago, blessed Mother Theresa of Calcutta said at a prayer breakfast attended by President Clinton that, "if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? … This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion."

Voting pro-life or being open to life is more than saying we should no longer allow abortion. It also opposes destroying any life whether by infanticide, assisted suicide, euthanasia, or capital punishment.

We have been bombarded with news of the economy, health care, education, the war on terror, and other important topics.

However, until we change our hearts and minds to protect life from the first moment of conception to natural death, then all the solutions to these other issues have no meaning.

Does (the author of the original letter) understand that she is here today able to express her opinion because her mother said "yes" to life?
