To the Editor:

I started out last April talking with (Brazil Times' General Manager) Lynne Llewellyn explaining the many breakdowns with the Clay County Veterans Van and always the need for more funds to repair.

Well, thinking there could be a difference, I took on the chore to gather together a commitment of five along with Michael Lawson (Riddell National Bank) and started a campaign to get the funds for a new mini-van for the Clay County Veterans Office and Mike Holland, VA Representative.

I thought of a long-time friend whom I grew up with and had held many years ago and as I worked with my dad at J.D. Smith's Ford Dealership on West Main Street, Brazil, and I would go for parts over at Hicks Auto Store, and run into William H. Hicks, learning all about Ford parts from his dad "Cyril."

Bill most times knew what parts were needed and always had the book in front of him to pinpoint the number. Bill was always a big help in getting the part and getting back to work. I remember Bill saying you have to fix the part and the rest works properly.

I followed Bill's career through many offices with the V.F.W. and the American Legion. He was always there to help the vets.

He always had good advice on autos, served in Korea and always went to the Indianapolis 500 race every year with Cyril.

He would have wanted to see the Clay veterans taken care of and he would say today, "Sarge, get 'er done."

Well, thanks Clay County. Mission accomplished.
