Reaching the flames

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

Van Buren Volunteer Fire Department brush trucks were kept busy Tuesday afternoon when a trash fire accidentally ignited a nearby field by a residence on County Road 1400 North, Brazil. VBVFD Fire Chief Pete Taylor and Lt. Tod Haring told The Brazil Times approximately 20 acres were burned during the incident that required assistance from Dick Johnson Volunteer Fire Department, Bridgeton Fire Department and Clay County Search and Rescue supplied water for the exhausted firefighters who battled to contain the blaze for more than an hour. Meanwhile, various fire departments throughout the county were also responding to other fires at the same time. "People really shouldn't be burning anything right now," Taylor said. A burn ban remains in effect until Nov. 16. Ivy Jacobs Photo.
