Thanksgiving basket program coming back

Sunday, August 21, 2011

To the Editor:

A group of individuals between agencies, organizations and churches are going to coordinate Thanksgiving baskets throughout Clay County again this year.

This process will follow the tradition of the Christmas Assistance Program.

There will be an application process and also will decrease the chances of families receiving more than one basket.

We have found throughout the years that there have been many families who have received multiple baskets and we believe that there are other families not getting the chance to take advantage of this opportunity when they are in need as well.

Applications for assistance will be made available to families in Clay County at the Brazil Housing Authority, Clay County Department of Child Services and Family Resources, Hamilton Center and throughout all county schools on Aug. 22.

The deadline for submitting an application for Thanksgiving Baskets will be Oct. 7.

Shortly after the Oct. 7 deadline, a small group of local volunteers will review the applications for completeness, check for any duplicates and confirm eligibility. Then, families with children they have custody of that qualify will be sent out to the various adoptive organizations, etc.

If you are interested in participating in adopting families in need of Thanksgiving baskets, please contact Monica Wallace at 448-8801.
