Conflicting responses from officials puzzling

At the Clay County Council meeting on Oct. 1, Commissioner Charlie Brown asked the council to transfer $50,000 from the account for stone and gravel purchase to other accounts because there was a surplus in that fund.

That is the fund that is used to purchase stone and gravel for road repairs.

Commissioner Brown also explained there was a surplus of stone and gravel in the highway department at this time.

After discussion, the County Council did transfer the money because it was needed in other accounts.

At the political forum at the YMCA Tuesday, Oct. 2, both commissioners Withers and Brown explained to all present that they could only do so much to repair the roads because they did not have enough money.

Now, you can't have it both ways. Either you have a surplus or you don't have enough funds and material.

You cannot speak out on Monday at the council meeting and say you have a surplus and then on Tuesday at the political forum, say you don't have enough money.

I think this is another example of how poorly our highway department is managed.

I wonder what they will do when they start receiving the wheel tax money they so badly needed.

Keep this in mind on Election Day.
