Honored to be invited to Veteran's event

To the Editor:

It was an honor and privilege to attend the lunch and program at Van Buren Elementary School, which brought back many memories both happy and sad.

Meeting some of my enlistees, among them Roy Kellar and Charles Walker, made me feel good as they both stopped to shake hands and tell me they had many happy times while in service; and they had many stories they could share.

It reminds me, too, that I lost three good men and a squad leader in Vietnam; one from Brazil.

I was met at the door by a fine young lady, Miss Faith Shrum, one of six whom greeted with a "Thank you for coming," and there were four from the fourth-grade also greeting, led by Miss Marle Mager.

The lunch was great and after going through the service line, ladies and students assisted with drinks and cake.

The program, having all the students dressed in their respective class T-shirts, were well-mannered seated on bleachers above us in the gym.

A fine program was presented and the students sang a song, "Thank you Soldiers," with a short video under the direction of Mrs. Kaufman.

After which, librarian Debbi Stout introduced the Jackson Township Community Band, under the direction of our own Matthew Huber, whom performed several numbers, also honoring each branch of service.

On behalf of some 125 guests, I wish to thank Mrs. Williams and her entire staff for a wonderful program paying us honor, both for the living and the deceased.

Thanks to V.F.W. Post 1127 and Commander Bob Bigley for presenting the colors and most of all, the entire school for these honors to past warriors, and the work of the student council.
