Samuel P. Carpenter, 96, of Brazil died Saturday, October 8, 2005 in his residence. He was born November 4, 1908 in Cloverland, IN to Harry Aubrey Carpenter and Eva Melinda Webster. His wife, Althea D. Lindsay Carpenter whom he married April 18, 1931 preceded him in death on March 18, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one son Harry Edward Carpenter, one brother George H. Carpenter and two sisters, Dorsey Keever and Helen Henderson. He is survived by one daughter Althea Ann Smith and companion Larry King of West Terre Haute; one son Samuel P. Carpenter, Jr. and his wife Teresa of Camarillo, CA; eight grandchildren Brian D. Smith and his wife Michele, Amy A. Smith, Samuel Chad Smith, Heather L. Ramirez, Ryan Carpenter, Tierra Stimson and her husband Rick, Courtney Carpenter and Chelsey Carpenter; nine great-grandchildren: Ariel Smith, Natasha Smith, Joshua Smith, Jacob Smith, Zachery Smith, Rebekah Smith, Alicia Ramirez, Elizabeth Ramirez, and Andrew Garcia; a niece and special caregiver Suzanne Keever; several nieces and nephews. He was a 61-year member of the Brazil, IN Elks Lodge #762; Brazil Lodge #541 F and AM; Ancient & Accepted Order of the Scottish Rite, Council Chapter Consistory Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute; Zorah Shrine; the Exchange Club and the Clay County Historical Society. He was a general contractor and worked with his father in the Carpenter Construction Company in Terre Haute prior to WWII. During WWII he worked seven years with E.I. Dupont Construction as a supervisor with the Hanford Plutonium plant in Hanford Washington. After WWII he founded and operated Carpenter Excavating Company. He served as Street Commissioner for the City of Terre Haute under former Mayor Leland Larrison and retired from the Indiana State Highway Department as supervisor over several rest parks on I-70 between Terre Haute and Indianapolis. He attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN and Rose Polytechnic Institute in Terre Haute. Services will be Friday October 14, 2005 at 1 p.m. in Roselawn Funeral Home with Brian D. Smith officiating. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be one hour prior to services in Roselawn Funeral Home.
