Further memories from the city

To the Editor:

Last month, I sent a Letter to the Editor talking about past history of Brazil, etc.

I said I would write again in January 2008.

I will start it off with carnivals and locations once in this city.

There was once a carnival located between north Columbia Street and north Vandalia Street, where a new addition is now located.

There was also a carnival located just off East Hendrix, where what is now known as the Northwood addition.

There was a carnival and rodeo just south of Ekrich on north Sherman Street, across from a wooden bridge that was built over railroad tracks. It was used as a walkover bridge.

Johnny's United Shows was in Forest Park during the Fourth of July celebration, and another carnival was at the 4-H Fair, held in Forest Park.

A Hoxie Brothers Circus was held in front of Roy Brann Stadium in 1956, along State Road 59, one time only.

One time only a carnival was held at Craig Park in 1985.

One time only another carnival was held on Jackson Street between south Meridian Street and south Walnut, either in the 80s or 90s.

Next month, on Feb. 29, my wife will celebrate her 17th birthday. Just kidding, but she was born on Feb. 29, which happens to be a leap year just like this one.

This year happens to be an election year and it seems our governor is trying to make it look good for himself with his H.I.P. program and his INShape program trying to write the wrongs he has already done to this state like leasing the toll road to a foreign company for 75 years, getting his all-day Kindergarten and raising taxes on tobacco.

I don't care how much he raises taxes on tobacco, as long as the industry makes it, I will be buy it. As long as the stores still sell it, no matter what the cost.

He also messed up the time too and now he's messing with people's property concerning taxes. Four more years of Daniels? I hope not.

They need to bring back those bumper stickers that said, "Ditch Mitch."

I will be writing again soon about some more old days, new days, and maybe some more politics, only the next time, I'm not going to wait for five or six weeks to do it.
